What Is Health Insurance

Health insurance covers hospitalisation and medical treatment costs, protecting you from large out-of-pocket expenses during illness or injury.

In India, medical costs are rising at 10–15% annually. A single hospitalisation — for surgery, a serious illness, or an accident — can cost anywhere from ₹50,000 to several lakhs. Health insurance ensures that a medical emergency does not become a financial one by covering these costs against a regular premium.

Why It Matters

Why Health insurance is important

Understanding the real-life impact of this insurance type helps you treat it as a financial priority — not just a compliance requirement.

Medical inflation in India is high

Healthcare costs in India are rising at 10–15% per year. A policy that seems adequate today may fall short in a few years without top-ups.

Out-of-pocket spending is among the world's highest

India's out-of-pocket health expenditure is over 47% of total health spending. Insurance directly reduces this burden for hospitalised patients.

Employer health cover is not permanent

Group health insurance from employers stops when you leave the job. Having a personal health policy provides continuous, portable protection.

Critical illnesses are expensive and common

Cancer, heart disease, and kidney failure require long, costly treatment. A strong health cover prevents these from draining lifetime savings.

Types

Types of Health insurance in India

Know the options before comparing insurers. Each type serves a different purpose and level of protection.

For individuals

Individual Health Insurance

Covers one person. The full sum insured is available for that individual. Best for single people or those whose family members already have separate cover.

Single person
For families

Family Floater Policy

One policy covers all family members. The sum insured is shared across the family. Cost-effective but the cover is diluted if multiple members claim in the same year.

Whole family
For parents & seniors

Senior Citizen Policy

Designed for people above 60. Higher premiums reflect higher health risk but usually provide age-appropriate coverage including pre-existing disease cover after waiting periods.

Additional cover

Critical Illness Policy

Pays a lump sum on diagnosis of specified critical illnesses like cancer, heart attack, or stroke. Not a replacement for regular health insurance — it works as additional protection.

Decision Guide

Which Health insurance should you choose?

Use this as a starting point. Your final choice should match your specific situation, risk level, and usage.

Young, single person

Individual policy with a sum insured of ₹5–10 lakh minimum. Consider a base policy with a super top-up for higher cover at lower cost.

Young family with children

Family floater policy. Choose a sum insured high enough for city hospital costs — ₹10 lakh or more in metro areas. Ensure children are included from birth.

Elderly parents

A separate senior citizen policy is usually better than adding them to a family floater, as their claims can exhaust the shared cover and leave others under-protected.

Corporate employee

Do not rely only on employer cover. Buy an independent policy so you have continuous cover between jobs and can add your parents without complications.

What to Check

Key things to verify before choosing an insurer.

These factors separate a reliable insurer from an unreliable one. All are publicly available or verifiable.

Cashless hospital network

A wider network means more hospitals where you can receive treatment without paying upfront. Verify that hospitals near your home and preferred hospitals are included.

Waiting periods

Initial waiting period (usually 30–90 days), pre-existing disease waiting period (1–4 years), and disease-specific waiting periods all affect when your cover activates.

Room rent limits and sub-limits

Many policies cap room rent at 1% of sum insured. If you choose a room above this limit, other treatment costs are proportionally reduced too — a significant hidden constraint.

No-claim bonus

Many insurers offer a sum insured increase for every claim-free year. This helps your cover keep pace with medical inflation without increasing the base premium.

Common Mistakes

Mistakes most buyers make — and how to avoid them.

These are the decisions that seem reasonable at the time but create problems at claim time.

Buying only for tax benefit under Section 80D

Tax saving is a side benefit, not a reason to buy insurance. Choose cover based on your health needs and city hospital costs — not the minimum needed for tax saving.

Not reading waiting period clauses

If you have a pre-existing condition, the waiting period before that condition is covered can be 1–4 years. Not reading this can create an unpleasant surprise at claim time.

Under-insuring based on current health

Medical costs in India are high and rising. Buying ₹2–3 lakh cover when a single surgery can cost ₹5–8 lakh leaves you underprotected.

Relying entirely on employer group cover

Employer health cover stops immediately when you leave the job — including nights and weekends. A personal policy provides continuous cover and is portable across employers.
