Health Insurance in India — Industry Insights

This section is about the health insurance market, not a ranking of insurers — year-by-year growth and claims behaviour across the whole industry, sourced directly from IRDAI's last 5 Annual Reports (2020-21 – 2024-25).

Market growth, year by year

Health insurance premium has grown 102% in 5 years — from ₹58,238 Cr in FY 2020-21 to ₹1,17,505 Cr in FY 2024-25.

Incurred Claims Ratio by insurer category

ICR is a claims-cost ratio (claims incurred ÷ premium earned) — not a claim-approval measure, and not something where higher or lower is simply "better". It's shown here to explain a real, consistent pattern: standalone health insurers run meaningfully lower ICR than public-sector insurers every single year, which reflects differences in pricing and business mix, not claim-settlement quality.

Premium by channelGroup 52.3% · Individual 39.7% · Government 8%
Lives covered by channelGroup 47.4% · Government 42.3% · Individual 10.3%

A relatively small share of premium (government-sponsored schemes, 8% of premium) covers the largest share of lives after group insurance — a useful reminder that premium share and population coverage tell different stories.

1,37,361 general & health insurance grievances were filed via Bima Bharosa in FY 2024-25 — claims handling is consistently the largest category. IRDAI also flags mis-selling and inadequate disclosure of policy terms as ongoing consumer-protection concerns.

What this section doesn't include, and why: a per-insurer Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR) trend across all 5 years. IRDAI published insurer-wise claims-status data for standalone health insurers only in FY2020-21 and FY2021-22; later annual reports give industry-wide totals only, not a per-insurer breakdown. Showing an estimated or substituted CSR for every insurer, every year, would look complete without actually being comparable — so we're leaving it out rather than filling the gap with a number that isn't really there. We're looking for a reliable source to close this gap, but can't promise one.
