The Group Cover Trap: Why 47.4% of Insured Indians Have No Real Safety Net

Nearly half of all insured Indians are covered only through employer group policies. Here is why that is a dangerous dependency — and what to do about it.

Who Is Actually Covered in India?

IRDAI's FY 2024-25 data reveals that of 58.2 crore lives covered under health insurance in India:

  • 47.4% are under Group/Corporate policies
  • 42.3% are under Government-sponsored schemes (PM-JAY, state schemes)
  • Only 10.3% hold individual retail policies

The individual retail number is the only one that matters for true financial protection — it is portable, lifelong, and does not depend on your employment status or income level.

The Structural Vulnerability of Group Cover

Group insurance from your employer has one fundamental flaw: it ends the day you leave. Resignation, layoff, retirement, or business closure — your coverage vanishes immediately.

This creates a dangerous gap. If you develop a health condition while employed (say, diabetes or hypertension), getting individual insurance after losing your job becomes significantly harder. Insurers will either exclude the condition, charge higher premiums, or impose longer waiting periods.

The portability option exists under IRDAI rules, but porting from a group policy to an individual policy mid-condition has strict conditions and a tight 45-day window.

Government Schemes: High Volume, Low Depth

42.3% of India's insured lives are under PM-JAY and state schemes. These are essential safety nets but have real structural limits:

  • ₹5 lakh family limit per year — one serious illness can exhaust this
  • Empanelled hospitals only — no access to many private corporate hospitals
  • No post-hospitalisation coverage beyond 15 days vs 60–180 days in commercial plans
  • No domiciliary treatment — only inpatient hospital care counts
  • No maternity waiting period — this is actually better than most commercial plans

PM-JAY is genuinely excellent for BPL families and the coverage it provides. But it was never designed to be a substitute for commercial health insurance for middle-income earners.

What This Means for You

If your only coverage is your employer's group policy, you are financially exposed the moment you change jobs, start a business, or retire. The recommendation is simple: buy an individual policy while you are young and healthy — even a basic ₹5–10 lakh policy.

Your waiting periods accumulate from the date of purchase. A 36-month PED waiting period started at 30 means by the time you are 33, you are fully covered. The same policy bought at 50 after a health scare costs 3x more and may come with exclusions.
