How we get and check this data
The Invest tools are only as good as the numbers under them. Here is where each number comes from, how fresh it is, and what we leave out.
Fixed deposit rates
- Collected by our team from each bank's published rates. For a small number of banks we use a third-party rates listing, and the result says so.
- Every rate shows the date it was read. We re-check each bank on a schedule: larger banks weekly, smaller ones every two weeks, and every bank after an RBI rate decision.
- The tools cover deposits below ₹3 crore for resident individuals, general and senior citizens. Larger deposits are priced by the bank case by case, so we do not show them.
- Tax-saver deposits (5 years, Section 80C) are listed for the banks where we have found a rate. A bank that is missing there has no tax-saver rate in our records yet; it is not a statement that it has none.
- Banks change rates without notice. Always confirm with the bank before you book.
Mutual funds
- NAVs come from AMFI, the industry body, and are updated every day at 10 AM for the previous business day. History goes back to January 2013, when Direct plans began.
- Returns are worked out from Direct plan, Growth option NAVs, so payouts do not distort them.
- Stored NAVs are never edited. A fund that changes its unit value by ten or a hundred times in one day, or publishes one obviously wrong NAV, is detected automatically and adjusted only when we calculate. Funds with large unexplained moves are kept out of category figures until reviewed.
- The growth cases in the SIP and Lump sum tools (weaker, middle, stronger) are the 10th, 50th and 90th percentile of what every Direct-plan fund of that type returned, starting in every month since 2013. They are worked out again every Sunday.
- History covers funds that exist today. Funds that were closed or merged are not in it, which can make past results look slightly better than they were.
The maths
- FD interest follows what banks state: compounded every quarter, simple interest for short deposits, and a lower rate for monthly payouts. We checked it against the calculators of ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and IDFC FIRST Bank.
- Assumptions, such as inflation or a growth rate you type, are always labelled as assumptions. Growth rates we suggest come from what real funds did in the past, shown as a spread, never as a forecast.
What we do not do
- We do not sell funds, take FD bookings, or earn fees or commission from banks or fund houses.
- We do not tell you which bank or fund to choose. We show what each choice would mean; you decide.
- Past performance is not an indication of future returns. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully.
