Incorporated 18 February 1938 as United India Fire and General Insurance Company, renamed United India Insurance Company in 1978. Nationalized in 1972, absorbing 12 Indian insurers, 4 co-operative insurance societies, the Indian operations of 5 foreign insurers, and LIC's southern-region general insurance business. A public-sector company owned by the Government of India, headquartered in Chennai.
