Incorporated 22 August 2000 and licensed by IRDAI on 23 October 2000 — the first private-sector general insurer licensed in post-liberalization India. Founded as a joint venture between Sundaram Finance and the UK's Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance PLC. Ageas Insurance International acquired a 40% stake in February 2019; ownership today is Sundaram Finance 50%, Ageas 40%, other Indian shareholders 10%.
